I’ll be the first to say that AI can be incredibly useful. I’ve used ChatGPT on numerous occasions for house decor tips, help with gardening for my zone, and all sorts of different things. Not to mention that it’s impossible to bypass AI now while doing a basic Google search; it’s all just automatically there.
But this post isn’t about how useful AI is; this post is about how AI is completely ruining the blogging world. Let me tell you why.
My experience with AI and blogging
When I first started my website, I was creatively charged. I had tons topics I wanted to write about. I was able to easily come up with ideas and run with them. I think we can all relate with how good that feels when you are fired up about something. 🙂
As time went on, I started to realize I could rely on AI to help me out a little bit with blog post ideas. I was able to get topic ideas and could then easily get the juices flowing on writing. I felt like this was a good way of using AI for my blog.
It’s a slippery slope
However, once I started getting topic ideas, AI would then prompt and say “would you like me to give you headers for this post?” to which I began to respond “yes!”. That made writing even easier; I now had a topic and headers. It was helpful to have my post become more structured and I really appreciated the formatting. But AI is the same as many things.. and it was a slippery slope.
With the automatic AI prompting, I found myself relying on assistance with writing more and more….and more.
“AI slop” on Pinterest
Like myself, many bloggers use Pinterest to showcase their posts. Creating a Pin for your post helps people find your website. But have you noticed the prevalence of AI on websites like Pinterest now? It’s becoming more and more difficult to find authentic content just about anywhere. I can recall a recent blog post I came across (directed there from a Pinterest Pin) and the post was completely written by AI. The blog “owner” even forgot to remove some of the AI prompts, so it was pretty obvious the post wasn’t written by a person.
Coming across that blog post and realizing it wasn’t even written by a human, made me feel frustrated, defeated, and disappointed in myself for my own personal use of AI.
I felt frustrated that it’s so easy to have a post, story, caption, letter, message, or ANYTHING at all written by AI.
I felt defeated that it seems so difficult to find true creative expression online anymore.
I felt disappointed in myself that I had relied on AI to help me with some of my previous posts.
So what now?
Well, I’m personally making a stance to no longer use AI on my website. I want my posts to be written by me, and sound like they were written by me. I want them to have typos, or sub-par headers.
Let’s bring back creative expression online, and more specifically, on blogs. I miss how blogs used to be like 15 years ago! They just aren’t the same anymore.
