If you're a mom, you know.. feeding your baby or toddler can be messy. Like, messier than you ever thought possible. I am thankful everyday that we own a dog who acts as an instant floor cleaner after every meal, because let's be real: half of the food ends up on the floor!
I'm a mom of a one-year old boy, who's been eating solids since around 6 months old. Everything I've done so far in motherhood is truly trial & error, and I've relied a lot on the recommendations of other trusted moms and online resources to help me choose different products.
Today I wanted to share with you my experience with Silicone Baby Feeding Suction Plates and why I recently decided to stop using them (and what I'm using instead)!
According to USA Today, "if you’re looking to reduce the amount of time you spend cleaning your floors, a suction plate or bowl for kids is the answer." I happen to agree, but I was really disappointed by the silicone suction plates/bowls I tried already. I've tried several:
At first, I thought the silicone was great when my son was 6-months old and not entirely interested in food. But as he grew a little older and more excited about eating solids, I really began seeing the downsides of using silicone!
Hard to Clean
I've heard and read of some conflicting information/opinions out there. A lot of people say silicone is really easy to clean, but I find the complete opposite! Especially after my son started eating 3 meals a day, I was cleaning silicone dishes non-stop. I found the silicone really absorbed oils & fats from the food, and was hard to get off with dish soap and water. The silicone was easily stained with certain fruits/spices, and I personally felt I could never 100% get it clean! Is it just me??? I don't know about you, but I don't have enough time to do a whole baking soda and vinegar deep clean after every meal!
Suctions Suck
Nothing will test your patience quite like this scenario: you make a delicious, aesthetically-pleasing & wholesome dish for your baby's lunch. You bring it over to them with a smile and place the dish on their tray; ensuring the suctions are adhered to the tray. Two seconds later, your baby yanks the dish off the tray (despite the "durable suction") and the whole meal ends up on the floor.
Can you relate?
This happened to me approximately 100 times. Once your baby has figured out they can get the dish off the tray, they will get it off. I've found that the silicone plates and bowls I've used, just don't cut it.
So, now let me save your life! I recently discovered the Munchkin Bambou Divided Suction Plate and ohhhh my goodness!
Not only is it super cute, but it is so easy to clean. You're easily able to detach the silicone suction strip to really get in there, and the bamboo itself makes for an easier time washing it (in my opinion). And when I tell you, the suction is CRAZY on this thing, I mean it! The plate will. not. budge. It's also made with non-toxic, renewable bamboo, so we love that too.
Have you tried it yet? It's a bit pricier, but I think it's worth it. This brand also has bowls and cups, which I haven't yet convinced my husband we need, but don't worry, I'm on it ;)
What are your thoughts on silicone dishes? Have they been a success for you? If I could go back in time, I'd skip all the silicone dishes and just invest in 1 or 2 of the Munchkin Bambou dishes!
