As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, there’s something special about ushering in the fall season with a little decorating. It’s more than just putting out a few pumpkins—it’s about setting the tone for the months ahead and creating a home that feels warm, welcoming, and in step with the season.
Here are a few simple ways to start decorating for Fall.
Vintage Wicker Baskets
I’ve begun quite the collection of wicker baskets in my home lately. So much so that when I go to the thrift store my husband knows I’ll likely come home with another one! I love using baskets to store books, my son’s toys, clothing, blankets, anything.

You can use wicker baskets in your home anytime of the year, but they lend really well to this cozy time of year don’t you think?
My favorite place to get vintage-style wicker baskets is my local thrift store but if you’re in need right now, here are some options:
- Ikea BYHOLMA baskets: perfect small rectangular basket at a great price!
- Wayfair Beachcrest Home baskets: circular baskets with handles for loose items, veggies or even plants.
- Artisan-made Oval Wicker basket (Etsy): support small businesses and artists by choosing sellers on places like Etsy. Adding to cart and saving up for this one.

Autumn-inspired Wreath
There is something so exciting about decorating your front door with a beautiful autumn-inspired wreath. Whether you choose to make your own, thrift one, or order online, they’re a staple for my house this time of year.

Like I said, there are lots of options for getting or making a wreath this time of year. Get some inspo here:
- If you’re like me and want to make your own, I found it easy to find photos of wreathes I like on Pinterest. Then I go to my local Dollar store and buy all the supplies. Grab your hot glue gun and go for it!
- I loooove this Autumn Wild Grass Wreath from Wayfair. So simple and charming.
- Okay I actually really like this one from Walmart and it’s only $16?!

Candles
I’m a total candle addict. There is something *necessary* about lighting fall-scented candles this time of year that is essential to my well-being.

Gathering up some autumn-inspired candles make the ambience of your home feel cozy and inviting. Not sure where to get some? Here are some resources I’ve purchased from in the past:
- I really love Kim and Pom Candles! I’ve purchased them from Etsy in the past, but now they have a shop front on Amazon too which can make it a little easier/accessible. They’re also vegan + toxin free. These scents are to die for:
- Cinnamon Bun
- Pumpkin Spice (obviously)
- Fall Treats
- Bath and Body Works Fall Collection has so many great options. Although their candles can be pricey, I find that they last quite a long time and the scent really carries through the room. My favorite scent over the past few years from them has been Pumpkin Pecan Waffles. I always get tons of compliments when it’s lit and it has the perfect level of sweetness!

Fall Garland

Whether you choose to make your own or buy one, adding a fall garland to your kitchen, mantle above the fireplace, or along a shelf is such a beautiful way to add cozy autumn vibes to your home.
- Learn How to Make a Dried Orange Garland from the Ginger Home. Dried orange garlands are simple to make. You only need a few supplies, most of which you probably already have in your home!
- I love these Falling Leaves Felt Ball Garlands from Etsy! They’re reusable year after year and are a great eco-friendly decoration for your home and parties.
- For a more earthy tone, you could even try making one of these Acorn Garlands from Wisconsin Magpie blog.

Why Bother Decorating for Fall?
Decorating for fall helps mark the shift from summer’s bright, busy pace to autumn’s slower, cozier rhythm. A few touches of seasonal decor—a wreath on the door, a homemade garland, or even a scented candle—signal that it’s time to embrace comfort, reflection, and family gatherings. These simple changes help us mentally settle into the season and appreciate its unique beauty.
It’s also a way of connecting to tradition. For many families, decorating for fall is tied to memories of harvest celebrations, Thanksgiving meals, or Halloween fun. Carrying those traditions forward not only makes a home more inviting but also strengthens the sense of togetherness year after year.
And let’s not forget how much our environment impacts our mood. Surrounding yourself with the colors, textures, and natural elements of autumn can lift your spirits, ease stress, and make your home feel like a cozy retreat from the cool weather outside. Even small touches—a candle with a spicy scent or a bowl of pinecones—can make a room feel refreshed and renewed without the need for major redecorating.
Ultimately, decorating for fall is about more than aesthetics—it’s about grounding ourselves in the rhythm of the seasons, welcoming loved ones into a warm space, and finding beauty in the simple act of making a house feel like home.
