I was initially inspired to make a homemade body lotion because of my toddler’s drool rash. I don’t know if you have a little one yourself, but my 20-month old son goes through long periods of time of lots of drooling. His chin and neck became pretty irritated over time because it was truly impossible to keep the area dry (even with the constant swapping of fresh bandanas!).

We tried all of the things: eczema creams, sensitive “baby” lotions, the nipple cream I used when I was nursing, vaseline, you name it.

It wasn’t until I made this natural body lotion recently that we actually experienced some major improvements in his drool rash. But, this lotion isn’t just good for little ones, anyone can use it! I love using it as a hand cream too.

Materials Needed

Coconut Oil: I use organic virgin coconut oil that I purchased in a huge tub from Costco. For use in skincare, the best kind of coconut oil to use is cold-pressed and unrefined. Look for virgin or extra virgin!

Cocoa Butter: cocoa butter is a natural fat extracted from cocoa beans. It’s commonly used in skincare products because it’s very moisturizing and can even improve the elasticity of your skin. I bought a bag of organic cocoa butter wafers from Amazon and they’ve been great to use. Bonus: cocoa butter smells sooo good!

Beeswax: Beeswax is a great additive for skincare products and has a lot of beneficial properties. It’s moisturizing and creates a natural protective barrier!

Essential Oils: This is totally optional. I did not use essential oils in mine, since the purpose for me was to heal my toddler’s skin. I didn’t want any extras. I find the scent of the cocoa butter to be really delicious. If you do want to add essential oils, try any of these:

  • Lavendar
  • Bergamot
  • Rose
  • Cedarwood

Double Boiler: If you (like me) don’t have a double boiler, you can create a makeshift one using a heatproof bowl and a pot of simmering water. Fill a pot with water, bring it to a boil, then lower the heat to a simmer. Place a heatproof bowl on top of the pot, ensuring there’s a gap between the water and the bowl to avoid direct heat. Add your ingredients to the bowl and gently stir until the desired consistency is reached.

Storage Container: I used small glass mason jars from the Dollar Store. You just have to make sure you can easily reach the contents inside!

How to Make Natural Healing Body Lotion

  • Step 1: Add the coconut oil, cocoa butter, and beeswax to a heat-resistant glass bowl. Place the glass bowl over a saucepan with an inch or two of water. Heat over medium heat until the ingredients are melted, stirring occasionally.
  • Step 2: Once melted, allow the bowl to cool slightly.
  • Step 3: Add essential oils if applicable.
  • Step 4: Transfer mixture to a glass container for storage. Once it cools down it will solidify and can be used as a cream.

I’m so curious your thoughts on this very easy & natural body lotion. You can use this anywhere! I love how versatile and soothing it is. In the future, I may add more beeswax as well as essential oils to experiment, but for now I find it perfect.
